4 Things I Wish I Knew Before Hiring a Wedding Photographer

I got married in 2010… that’s before Pinterest if you’re interested! I knew NOTHING about wedding photography back then! In fact, browsing through multiple websites made my eyes hurt! I really couldn’t tell the difference and I just wanted to get married and have it photographed well.

Well, here are 4 things I really wish I had known before making my decision. And I hope it helps you find the perfect photographer for you.

Yes, there are actually different styles of photography and difference ways that your photographer will interact with you on your wedding day!

All of these methods produce different types of images and are a different experience with posing or candid. Some photographers may fit in multiple categories or not know how to quantify their style and so they just pick one to say.

The best advice is to ask how they work with posing their couples on the wedding day rather than “what’s your style?”

You may have noticed varying prices of photography. Not all photographers are equal. There are years of experience that go into knowing exactly how to walk into a room and photograph it well. Or how to pose different types of couples. Or even how to photograph in the darkest of receptions.

It won’t rain on your wedding day, of course, but if it did, are you confident that the photographer you choose will be able to execute gorgeous images even if you are stuck indoors?

Looking at years in the business, number of weddings, and seeing WHOLE wedding galleries (pay attention to reception and night shots) is a great way to make sure you don’t get stuck with someone inexperienced.

It’s just a service, right? Why is this on the list?

Well, your photographer is with you for your entire wedding day, almost like having an extra bridesmaid! And you know how carefully you are crafting that list!

Your photographer’s personality will play into how they interact with you on your wedding day and how they will hold up in stressful situations that may arise. It just overall impacts your experience and how you will later view your photographs. You want all your memories to be positive ones that feel relaxed!

Choose someone you trust and that you could be friends with, photography aside. Who knows! We might even end up hanging out multiple times after your wedding just for fun!

Lastly, check the fine print and make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Look at the hours, how many photographers you are getting, if the engagement session is included, included albums or other items, and will there be travel fees.

We all know you get what you pay for, but if you focus on the tips above for your short list, you will be well on your way to finding the perfect photographer for you!

Want to know more about me?

  1. I consider myself between fine art & a photojournalism. The best photographs are candid, but there are ways to create an experience that will elicit natural reactions. Most couples don’t even know I’m actually posing them for the best angles throughout their session and then waiting for the authentic laugh.
  2. I have been telling love stories since 2013 and have documented over 50 wedding days! To see a whole wedding, let’s meet. I love showing the album with the online gallery so you can see the whole picture (pun intended).
  3. People Describe Me As: Genuine. Generous. Kind. Helpful. Brave. Bold. Relaxed. Adventurous. Joyful. Dynamic. Authentic. Glowing. Bubbly.
  4. Wedding collections start at only 2850!
